CROP UPDATE FOR THE 2022/23 PRODUCTION SEASON

By: Raisins South Africa NPC

The initial crop forecast for the 2022/23 production season was 78 000 tons in November 2022. This forecast was informed by the assessment of vineyard health and early indications from key technical staff. The long-term weather forecast also presented above-average rainfall, which has fortunately not materialized. Although the Orange River experienced flood-like conditions in the latter part of 2022, no real production losses were suffered.

Despite excellent drying conditions, with the past two weeks' temperatures exceeding 40ÂșC, Raisins SA has reviewed the crop forecast. The crop is at least 10 to 12 days early. The crop is expected to be smaller than initially anticipated, with the new estimate ranging from 63 000 to 68 000 tons. The remaining harvest of the cultivar with the most hectares, Merbein Seedless, which accounts for 44% of the total industry, will be decisive.

The good news is that the fruit quality is excellent due to the good weather conditions.
